My great-grandfather, Caspar Franken, started his photography studio in Eupen (then Germany, now Belgium) in 1879. My grandfather, Leonard Franken took over the business, when after WWI, he could not pursue his true love, farming, aided by my grandmother, Helene Lindner, who was the first woman master photographer in the German Reich. My aunt Margit and her husband Harry Dyba took over in the 1950s. Harry helped when I purchased my first SLR in 1976, a Yashica FX-1 and remained a frequent advisor. Currently, Foto Franken in Eupen is headed by my cousin George. Like many studios it is struggling with changes in the business.
The name of this blog is meant to pay homage to a family tradition. I am using this place to share some of the images I cherish. I hope you will contribute with your comments and critiques.
